Choto-san (Gouteng-san) is a Japanese (Kampo) herbal
medicine with apparent neuroprotective effect against glutamate-
induced neuronal death (Itoh et al., 1999; Watanabe
et al., 2003). Choto-san was administered for 12 weeks to 10
patients with post-stroke VCI; P3 event-related brain potentials,
MMSE and verbal fluency tests significantly improved
with treatment (Yamaguchi et al., 2004). In a larger trial,
Choto-san resulted in improvement of ADLs, global rating
and subjective and psychiatric symptoms (Itoh et al., 1999).
