Many of the peroxymonosulfates have never been
formed. An example is beryllium peroxymonosulfate.
Magnesium peroxymonosulfate has the molecular
formula of MgSO5 and the molecular weight of
136.3682 g/mol. It can be produced by the reaction of
magnesium hydroxide, fuming sulfuric acid and
hydrogen peroxide:
Mg(OH)2
+H2O2
+H2SO4 ? MgSO5
+ 3H2O
The hexahydrate results upon evaporation and
recrystallization of the solution at a low temperature of
～15°C. This salt is offered for sale as MgSO5·6H2O
and is used as a fumigant and biocide in hospitals. It is
a very strong oxidizing agent and care must be taken
in handling. This compound provides powerful nonchlorine
oxidation for a wide variety of industrial and
consumer uses. Its applications may be found in pool
and spa shock and disinfection, oral hygiene formulations,
polymerization initiator and oxygen-releasing
agent in aquiculture.
Strontium peroxymonosulfate would have the
molecular formula of SrSO5 and the molecular weight
of 152.1412 g/mol. It could be produced by the reaction
of calcium hydroxide, fuming sulfuric acid and
hydrogen peroxide:
Sr(OH)2+H2O2+H2SO4 ? SrSO5+ 3H2O
Upon evaporation and recrystallization of the solution
at a low temperature of ～15°C, it is expected that
a hexahydrate would result. However, the scientific
literature is completely devoid of mention of the preparation
of such a salt and no physical or chemical properties
have been documented. It is not known whether this
salt or others like it could be prepared or are stable. Since
both Mg and Ba form stable compounds, the mystery of
why this salt has not been described remains unknown.
Barium peroxy-monosulfate has the molecular
formula of BaSO5 and the molecular weight of
249.3932 g/mol. It can be produced by the reaction of
barium hydroxide, fuming sulfuric acid and hydrogen
peroxide:
Ba(OH)2+H2O2+H2SO4 ? BaSO5+ 3H2O
The question of the existence of hydrates remains
unknown since this salt is soluble, is very toxic and is
used as a solution. It is referred to in a few patents
that describe methods of producing pyrrolidine derivatives.
