Colchicum autumnale, Gloriosa virescens and Littoria modesta contain this
alkaloid in the corms and seeds. It forms colourless needles from EtOH and is
laevorotatory having a specific rotation of [α]D - 1190 (CHCI3). It has been
separated from the associated bases in these plants by column chromatography
and countercurrent distribution techniques.
