musty odor. Melting point varies with isomeric
composition. Stable toward moderate heat but
decomposed by alkaline substances.
Insoluble in water; soluble in 100% alcohol, chloroform, and ether.
Component of insecticides; toxic to flies, cockroaches, aphids, grasshoppers, wireworms, and boll
weevils.
A systemic insecticide. The γ isomer is known as
lindane.
Toxic by ingestion and inhalation, absorbed
by skin, strong irritant to skin and eyes. CNS depressant. Use may be restricted.
