The Human Protein Atlas project can be subdivided into three efforts: Human Tissue Atlas, Cancer Atlas, and Human Cell Atlas. RNF213 (ring finger protein 213) gene encodes a protein containing a C3HC4-type RING finger domain. This domain is capable of binding to two atoms of zinc, thereby mediating protein-protein interactions. It contains an AAA domain that has ATPase activity and is abundantly expressed in spleen and leukocytes. The AAA domain has a ring-shaped structure and mediates several biophysical and mechanical processes. It also functions as a ubiquitin ligase and may regulate vascular development. The gene is a susceptibility gene for Moyamoya disease, an idiopathic human cerebrovascular disorder characterized by progressive stenosis and abnormal collateral vessels.
