Sodium-dependent phosphate transporter 1 (SLC20A1) protein is a high-affinity sodium (Na+)-phosphate (Pi) co-transporter th at imports inorganic phosphate (Pi). It serves as a receptor for gibbon ape leukemia virus (GALV), feline leukemia virus type B (FeLV-B), woolly monkey virus and 10A1 murine leukemia virus, making it crucial for viral entry. SLC20A1 is essential for urinary tract and urorectal development. Variants ofSLC20A1 gene are implicated in the pathophysiology of bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex (BEEC) and in cloacal exstrophy. It may also participate in normal growth and development of the liver. Elevated expression of SLC20A1 gene is correlated to the activation of the wingless (Wnt)/β-catenin signaling pathway in somatotroph adenomas. SLC20A1 protein may participate in tumor necrosis factor-induced apoptosis and regulate cell proliferation, erythroid and B cell differentiation.
