Phenethyl nonanoate finds a little use in perfume compositions as a modifier for Rose bases and floral-herbaceous complexes. It performs best when both Rose and herbal notes are present, e. g. Lavender or Clary Sage, in Chypre etc.
Phenethyl nonanoate is used in Wine and Cognac or Brandy flavor compositions but it is not included in the American G.R.A.S. list.
Phenethyl nonanoate is produced by azeotropic esterification of Phenylethyl alcohol with Nonanoic acid.
Phenethyl nonanoate's taste is pleasantly winey-ethereal, sweet and discretely fruity at concxmtrations below 5 ppm.
