Powdery-hcrbaceous and slightly fruity
odor of good tenacity. There is no "Apple-like" odor, and
no intense greenness, but there is a deep
herbaceous and very lasting, semi-dry, powdery note which could be classified as part of
the Tagetes picture.
The ester has found a little use in perfume
compositions, mainly for fantasy notes, new
variations of "powdery" notes, etc., and in
certain types of "tabac" fragrances, with
proper support of Clary sage and Linalyl- ogcertain "Carbinyl"-esters it can supply a Tealike effect of some interest.
Colorless, slightly viscous liquid. Sp.Gr. 1.24.
Practically insoluble in water, soluble in
alcohol and oils.
Ethyl piperonylate can be produced by oxidation of Heliotropine with
Potassium permanganate to produce the acid,
from which the ester is made by conventional
methods.
The acid is also obtained directly from
Safrole.
