Ubiquitin, also known as ubiquitin C (UBC), is a globular protein, encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 12q24.31. The encoded protein consists of 76 amino acids.
Ubiquitin plays a major role in protein degradation. Ubiquitin-mediated degradation of regulatory proteins has been implicated in the regulation of various processes, such as cell-cycle progression, signal transduction, transcriptional regulation, receptor down-regulation and endocytosis. Aberrations in the ubiquitin-mediated pathways contribute to malignant transformation.
