Pharmaceutical Applications
Lithium
bicarbonate or citrate is used in the treatment of BD, whereas potassium bicarbonate or citrate is used
in over-the-counter drugs as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) against urinary-tract infections
(increasing the pH of the urine) in the United Kingdom. Their solubility is highly dependent on the metal
and varies from sparingly soluble (e.g. Li2CO3) whereas others are very soluble.
