5-Bromo-4-methyl-2-vinylpyridine (600 mg, 3 mmol) was used as raw material and dissolved in a solvent mixture of acetone-water (1:1, 54 mL). Subsequently, potassium permanganate (KMnO4, 957 mg, 6 mmol) was added to this solution. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 days. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was filtered to remove insoluble impurities, and the filtrate was concentrated and purified by column chromatography to give 5-bromo-4-methylpyridine-2-carboxylic acid (700 mg, 92% yield) as a white solid.
