1-(2-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)-1-propanone

Preparation by Fries rearrangement of o-cresyl propionate,
with aluminium chloride, without solvent, at 50° for 3 h (16%) , at 120° for 3 h (40%), at 130° (35%), at 160° for 2 h (60%) or at 165° for 1 h (41–45%) or in nitromethane at 20° for a week (18%)；
with zirconium chloride in o-dichlorobenzene over 1 h at 120°.
