Anti-NAD-dependent malic enzyme, mitochondrial precursor

NAD-dependent malic enzyme (ME2) converts malate to pyruvate and also participates in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter γ-amino butyric acid (GABA). It reversibly catalyzes nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP-) and NADPH-dependent oxidative decarboxylation of malate to give pyruvate and carbon dioxide. ME2 supplies a pool of pyruvate for GABA synthesis and plays a role in the glutamate cycle of neurons.
