Dimethyl 3,4-furandicarboxylate is a furan compound that is useful as a diene for Diels-Alder transformations. Dimethyl 3,4-furandicarboxylate was employed as the precursor to a furan used as the diene in preparing dendrons and dendrimers based on reversible furan-maleimide Diels-Alder adducts, where Dimethyl 3,4-furandicarboxylate was reduced to the bis-hydroxymethyl species prior to dendron coupling.
