Blasticidin A, an antibiotic produced by Streptomyces, has been shown to have strong inhibitory activity toward aflatoxin production by Aspergillus parasiticus. This inhibition of aflatoxin production does not have a strong growth suppressing impact toward the aflatoxin-producing fungi. There was a decrease in abundance of ribosomal protein observed in Blasticidin A treated A. parasitici. Experiments indicate that Blasticidin A significantly reduced the expression of genes encoding aflatoxin regulatory gene and biosynthetic enzymes (omtA, ver-1, and pksA) in A. parasiticus.
