Doripenem is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is in the β-lactam subclass known as carbapenems. It inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by attaching to penicillin-binding proteins. It is effective against many Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and is more effective against P. aeruginosa than other carbapenems. However, it is not effective against multidrug-resistant S. aureus.
