The cathinones are a family of compounds characterized by a β-keto moiety positioned on a phenylethylamine framework. Some cathinones are natural monoamine alkaloids with psychotropic activities. Pentedrone (hydrochloride) is a substituted cathinone that is structurally similar to methcathinone , a psychoactive stimulant that is a controlled substance in the United States and other countries. Pentedrone differs from methcathinone by having a propyl, rather than methyl, side chain. The physiological and toxicological properties of pentedrone have not been established.
