Description
A pyranoquinolone alkaloid found in Oricia suaveolens, this base does not form
salts with mineral acids. The structure has been established by synthesis as 6:7-
dimethoxy-N-methylflindersine.
Chemical Properties
White to beige crystalline powder
Uses
Orcinol monohydrate is usually used to prepare colorimetric reagents for the determination of RNA, DNA,and hexoses.
Uses
5-Methylbenzene-1,3-diol Hydrate is the hydrated form of 3,5-Dihydroxytoluene(D454760); 3,5-Dihydroxytoluene is found in lichen fungi and can improve functional properties of lysozyme.
General Description
Orcinol is a small-molecule natural phenol involved in the production of a dye called orcein used for the staining of cells and chromosomes. Orcinol monohydrate is usually used to prepare a colorimetric reagent known as Bial′s reagent for the determination of RNA, DNA, and hexoses.
Purification Methods
Purify orcine by recrystallisation from H2O as the monohydrate. It sublimes in vacuo, and the anhydrous compound has m 106.5-108o (110o, 108o). It can be recrystallised from CHCl3 (plates) or *C6H6 (needles or prisms). [UV: Kiss et al. Bull Soc Chim Fr 275 1949, Adams et al. J Am Chem Soc 62 732 1940.]
