1,2-Butanediol is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water.

Uses

1,2-Butanediol can be used as an ink solvent, as well as in the production of polyester resins and plasticizers. It can also be used as a raw material for unsaturated polyester resins by reacting 1,2-butanediol with unsaturated dicarboxylic acid.

Synthesis

In a 100 L reactor, 50 kg of water, 10 kg of acetone, 44 kg of potassium peroxodisulfate complex salt (oxone, 0.071 Kmol), potassium chloride 6.3 kg (0.11 Kmol) and 1-butene 4 kg (56.11, 0.071 Kmol) were added and heated.
