8-Hydroxy-1-naphthoic acid [1769-88-6], mp 169℃, is prepared by hydrolysis (60 % H2SO4) of 8-cyanonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid and caustic fusion of the resulting anhydride of 8- sulfo-1-naphthoic acid. It couples with diazo compounds in the 5-position.
