D-ribo-Phytosphingosine has been used to determine its ability to rescue the growth defect of the PFA4 deletion strain (pfa4Δ) in response to myriocin. It has also been used to capture phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2), phosphatidylinositol triphosphate (PI(3,4,5)P3), phosphatidyl serine (PS) and phosphatidyl choline (PC) liposomes on a carboxymethyl dextran chip (CMDHchip). It may be used for the preparation of lipids.

PHS metabolism results in the formation of glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids and even-numbered fatty acids which mainly include palmitic acid.
