Synthesis
General method: Catalyst (0.1 mol %) and potassium hydroxide (1 mmol) were dissolved in isopropanol (4 mL). To this solution 2-acetylpyrazine (1 mmol) was added and the mixture was heated to reflux (82 °C). The progress of the reaction was monitored by gas chromatography (GC) periodically during the reaction. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and filtered through a silica gel or alumina column using a 50% ethyl acetate-hexane mixture as the eluent. The eluate was collected, concentrated and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and/or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
