Biological Activity
CNTN3 (Contactin-3) gene encodes a lipid-anchored cell adhesion protein belonging to the Contactins subgroup th at are part of the immunoglobulin superfamily th at are exclusively expressed in the nervous system. They contain six Ig-like and four fibronectin III-like domains th at are anchored to the membrane by glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI). It is also called as plasmacytoma-associated neuronal glycoprotein (PANG) and is abundantly expressed in Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, granule cells of the hippocampal dentate gyrus, and neurons in the superficial layers of the cerebral cortex. Contactins function in axon guidance, fasciculation, and synaptogenesis and regulate several processes in neural circuit formation in the developing cerebellum.
