Chemical Properties
Hydrobromic acid is a Clear yellow to golden colored fuming liquid. It is a strong acid formed by dissolving the diatomic molecule hydrogen bromide (HBr) in water.
Uses
Hydrobromic acid is an indispensable raw material for organic intermediates, inorganic pharmaceuticals, photosensitive materials, dyes and medicines. It is also used in the production of bromine compounds. It is used as an important agent in the industrial processes of isomerization, polymerization, hydration and dehydration and esterification reactions. It plays an essential role for the extraction of mercury from the cinnebar ore.
Reactions
Hydrobromic acid reacts with sulfuric acid forming sulfur dioxide, bromine and water. The chemical equation is given below.
2HBr + H2SO4 → Br2 + SO2 + 2H2O
Hydrobromic acid reacts with propene undergoe addition reaction resulting in the formation of 2-Bromopropane. The chemical equation is given below.
HBr + C3H6 → C3H7Br
