Uses
POVPC is a oxidized phospholipid that is commonly found as an active component of minimally modified low density lipoprotein. POVPC inhibits cell proliferation and exhibits cytotoxic effects in vascular smooth muscle cells.
Definition
ChEBI: 1-O-palmitoyl-2-O-(5-oxovaleryl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine is a 1,2-diacyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine having palmitoyl and 5-oxovaleryl groups at the 1- and 2-positions respectively; major species at pH 7.3. It has a role as an apoptosis inducer. It is a 1,2-diacyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and an aldehyde. It is a conjugate base of a 1-O-palmitoyl-2-O-(5-oxovaleryl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine(1+).
Biological Activity
1-palmitoyl-2-(5-oxovaleroyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (POVPC) affects endothelial function by hindering activity of endothelial nitric oxide synthase and stimulating endothelial cell apoptosis. It is implicated in the development of atherosclerosis and it may be used as a potent therapeutic for atherosclerosis.
