Sugar spheres are a widely used excipient for sustained-release pellet formulations used in oral dosage forms. Sugar spheres are white seeds composed of sucrose and starch, produced often by using a layered sugar-coating structure. Sugar spheres are then coated with the active substance and sustained-release additives.
