MCPB sodium is produced through a straightforward sequence that mirrors the chemistry of other phenoxy alkanoate herbicide salts. The process begins with MCPB (4 (4 chlorophenoxy)butyric acid), which is obtained by etherifying para-chlorophenol with a butyric acid derivative under alkaline conditions. Once the free acid is purified, it is neutralised with sodium hydroxide in aqueous or mixed solvent media, forming the sodium carboxylate salt.
