pitch: A black or dark-brown residueresulting from the distillation of coaltar, wood tar, or petroleum (bitumen).The term is also sometimesused for the naturally occurring petroleum residue (asphalt). Pitch isused as a binding agent (e.g. in roadtars), for waterproofing (e.g. inroofing felts), and as a fuel.
