Chemical Properties
White crystals.
Slightly soluble in water.
General Description
Metaboric can be prepared in three crystal forms; orthorhombic α, monoclinic β, cubic γ. 1 Detailed study of the monoclinic and cubic structures of the acid has been reported. Metaboric acid can be obtained by heating boric acid at 120
oC for 4h.
Synthesis
Metaboric acid occurs when H3BO3 is heated to 80-100°C for several days, either in an oven or in a dry air stream, until the calculated amount of water has been removed.
