Description
Credazine is an obsolete herbicide that was used to control grasses and broadleaved weeds. The substance has not been extensively studied and so little information is known regarding its environmental fate, ecotoxicity or impact on human health.
Production Methods
Credazine was produced using the same multipurpose agrochemical manufacturing methods applied to other chloro s triazines of the 1960s–1980s. Commercial production began with cyanuric chloride, the universal starting material for this herbicide class, which was reacted stepwise with the appropriate alkylamines or substituted amines under controlled temperature conditions to ensure selective mono and di substitution on the triazine ring. Each substitution step required careful cooling, pH control, and staged addition because cyanuric chloride reacts exothermically and its reactivity decreases sharply with each substitution. After the final amine was introduced to form credazine’s specific dialkylamino triazine structure, the reaction mixture was neutralised, filtered, and subjected to solvent exchange and crystallisation to yield technical grade material.
