Uses

Alkyne Cholesterol is an alkynyl derivative of cholesterol-derived oxysterols used for the detection method to establish secosterols A and B (isomeric aldehydes secosterol A and B obtained through ozonolysis of cholesterol) as the most protein-reactive of the oxysterols tested.

Biological Activity

Alkyne-cholesterol is not applicable for use in living cells due to copper ion (Cu (I) and Cu (II)) requirements. It aids in easy and sensitive detection of cholesterol using various biophysical methods. Alkyne-cholesterol can be conjugated to boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) fluorescent dye. It is useful in cholesterol trafficking studies in various organelles including mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi.
