Biological Activity
Phytosphingosine acts as a sphingoid backbone for phytoceramide, which is a yeast analogue of the mammalian ceramide. Phytosphingosine and its derivatives are allied with bodyμs natural defense system. These lipids prevent dehydration of skin, control epidermal cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. In addition, they also exhibit anti-bactericidal and anti-inflammatory activities. Thus, Phytosphingosine and its derivatives is essential for maintaining healthy skin. But, at high concentrations these compounds are toxic.
