Sphingomyelin controls cell growthdifferentiationapoptosis and signal transduction along the membrane. It is known to prevent the proliferation of colon tumour. Sphingomyelin also inhibits cholesterol absorption. Abnormal accumulation of sphingomyelin causes Niemann Pick disease.
