Description
Strontium selanate has the molecular formula of
SrSeO4 and the molecular weight of 230.5798 g/mol. It
can be prepared by reacting sodium selenate with strontium
chloride in solution:
SrCl2(aq)+ Na2SeO4(aq) ? SrSeO4+ 2NaCl(aq)
The result is strontium selenate whose CAS number is
7446-21-1. It is slightly soluble in water at 0.656 g/100 ml
at 20°C. Evaporating the solution serves to form white,
orthorhombic crystals, with a density of 4.25 g/cm3. It is
less soluble in hot water at 0.1152 g/100 ml at 100°C and
soluble in hot HCl.
SrSeO4 is monoclinic with a space group of P21/n and
lattice parameters of: a= 6.853, b=7.352, c=7.102,
β=0.7107, V=348.0 ?3, Z= 4. The major use for this
compound has been to form SrSe by reduction:
SrSeO4(solid)+H2(gas)+ heat ? SrSe(solid)+H2O(gas)
Strontium selenate is available commercially from
several manufacturers.
