Production Methods
Dinoseb ammonium was produced commercially through a straightforward neutralisation route built on the parent phenolic herbicide dinoseb. Industrial manufacturers first generated dinoseb itself by nitrating 2 tert butylphenol under controlled conditions to introduce the two nitro groups, followed by purification to remove tarry by-products typical of mixed-acid nitration. The resulting dinoseb was then converted into the ammonium salt simply by reaction with aqueous ammonia, usually in a solvent system that allowed good heat dissipation and avoided oxidative degradation of the nitrophenol. This neutralisation step produced a more water-soluble, salt for formulation

Inhibits respiratory electron transport, and uncouples oxidative phosphorylation - membrane disruption. Selective, non-systemic. Contact action.
