Dimethachlor is a pre-emergence herbicide. It is highly soluble in water and has a low volatility. It is not expected to be persistent in soil systems but may be persistent in aquatic systems depending on local conditions. Based on its physico-chemical properties, dimethachlor is not expected to leach to groundwater. It is highly toxic to algae, moderately toxic to other aquatic species, birds and earthworms, and a low toxicity to honeybees. Dimethachlor has a moderate toxicity to mammals if ingested and is an irritant.

Dimethenamid pure product is white scaly crystal, melting point 137.5~139°C. It is easily soluble in organic solvents such as acetone, tetrahydroxylenol, ethanol and so on. It is easily soluble in organic solvents such as acetone, tetrahydroxysorbate, dimethylsorbate, etc. It is soluble in methanol, ethanol, insoluble in n-hexane, petroleum ether, almost insoluble in water. The original powder is light brown solid, the content of the active ingredient does not change much when stored at room temperature. It is more stable in acid, easy to decompose in alkali and sunlight irradiation, and should be stored in a shaded and cool place.

The crude dimethachlor is purified via filtration and recrystallisation to achieve high purity and formulated.
