Apolipoprotein E, human has been used as a standard for the quantification of ApoE protein in the sucrose density gradient (SDG) fractions and the unfractionated brain homogenates using an in-house developed sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). It has also been used in western blotting to assess its exogenous effects on low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-heparin interactions.
Biological Activity
In addition to facilitating solubilization of lipidsapolipoproteins help to maintain the structural integrity of lipoproteinsserve as ligands for lipoprotein receptorsand regulate the activity of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) plays an important role in lipid metabolism. It′s interaction with specific ApoE receptor enables uptake of chylomicron remnants by liver cellswhich is an essential step during normal lipid metabolism. It also binds with the LDL receptor (Apo B/E). Defects in ApoE are a cause of hyperlipoproteinemia type III.
