Production Methods
Metam-ammonium is produced by first manufacturing technical metam (methyl isothiocyanate precursor) through the well-established reaction of methylamine with carbon disulfide, followed by controlled oxidation to form the dithiocarbamate intermediate. Commercial producers then convert this intermediate into the ammonium salt by neutralising it with ammonium hydroxide or another ammonium base under carefully managed pH and temperature conditions. This yields a water-soluble ammonium dithiocarbamate, which is standardised and formulated.
