Chemical Properties
Light brown powder. Melting point 196-197°C. Insoluble in water, soluble in butanol and pyridine. The dye forms a brownish-yellow solution in sulfuric acid; a yellow solution with green fluorescence in sodium hydroxide; insoluble in sodium carbonate solution. Slightly air-sensitive.
Uses
Naphthol AS-LT is a commonly used base dye for red. It can be coupled with various red bases to obtain maroon and various shades of red. It can also be coupled with other bases to obtain yellow, orange, blue, etc., but it is mostly used for dyeing red. For example, coupling with maroon bases GP and GBC yields maroon, while coupling with scarlet bases GGS and G, and red bases B, RC, and ITR all produce red. It is mainly used for dyeing and printing cotton fabrics, and also for dyeing silk, nylon, diacetate fiber, viscose fiber, and vinylon. It has a moderate affinity for cotton.
