Uses
Blasticidin S hydrochloride is a salt of blasticidin S, an amphoteric nucleoside produced by several species of Streptomyces, first reported in the late 1950s. Blasticidin S hydrochloride was originally isolated by acetone precipitation. For historical reasons only the salt has been routinely available to researchers. Both the salt and free base are freely water soluble. Blasticidin S is an antifungal agent with particularly potent activity against the rice pathogen, Piricularia oryzae, for which it was used commercially for some time in Japan. Blasticidin S inhibits protein synthesis and is active against bacteria, tumor cell lines and nematodes. More recently, blasticidin S has been used as a marker for strain manipulations.

Uses
Inhibits protein synthesis and induces apoptosis. Used to study protein synthesis at the level of peptide bond formation.
Description
Blasticidin S HCl (3513-03-9) is a peptidyl nucleoside antibiotic inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria and eukaryotes.1?Inhibits translation by trapping deformed tRNA on the ribosome.1?The ABC-type transporter NppA1A2BCD is required for uptake of blasticidin S and other peptidyl nucleoside antibiotics in?Pseudomonas aeruginosa?PA14.2?Selection agent for bis, bsr and bsd transformed cells.3,4
General Description
Nucleoside antibiotic that specifically inhibits protein synthesis in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Suitable for selection of cells carrying plasmids conferring blasticidin resistance. Blasticidin resistance is conferred by the blasticidin S deaminase gene (bsr) that converts blastisidin S to a nontoxic deaminohydroxy derivative.
