General procedure for the synthesis of (R)-tert-butyl(2-oxopiperidin-3-yl)carbamic acid from di-tert-butyl dicarbonate and (R)-3-aminopiperidin-2-one: (R)-3-aminopiperidin-2-one (1.00 g, 8.76 mmol) was dissolved in dichloromethane (15 mL), triethylamine (1.28 mL, 9.2 mmol) and di-tert-butyl dicarbonate were added. butyl dicarbonate (2.01 g, 9.2 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 12 hours and then concentrated under vacuum. The crude product was diluted with ether (50 mL) and filtered through a diatomaceous earth pad. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness and purified by silica gel column chromatography (50 g of silica gel, 100% ethyl acetate) to give 1.65 g of colorless foamy (R)-tert-butyl(2-oxopiperidin-3-yl)carbamic acid in 88% yield.
