Production Methods
The commercial production of endothal dipotassium typically begins with the synthesis of endothall which itself starts with production of its bicyclic dicarboxylic acid structure, 7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,3-dicarboxylic acid. This involves a Diels-Alder reaction between maleic anhydride and furan, forming the oxabicyclic ring system. The resulting adduct is then hydrolysed to yield the diacid form of endothal. Finally, the endothal diacid is neutralised with potassium hydroxide to create the dipotassium salt form.
