Eotaxin is a chemoattractant for eosinophilsand is involved inflammatory diseasessuch as asthma. It is induced by glucocorticoids and cytokines. Along with interleukin-5 (IL-5) it results in airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR)and hencelung inflammatory disorders. In humansit leads to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine-enhanced diseaseand the eosinophils are also responsible for the elimination of virus. It might also be involved in the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel diseases which involve eosinophils. It can lead to the production of reactive oxygen speciesthusresulting in damaged tissue. It is overexpressed in multiple diseases such as allergic rhinitisnasal polyposisendometriosis and Hodgkin′s disease.
