The general procedure for the synthesis of 3-methylbiphenyl-2-ol from o-cresol and homotrimethylphenyl(phenyl)iodonium trifluoromethanesulfonate was as follows: to a reaction tube containing [Rh(cod)Cl]2 (3.08 mg, 0.00625 mmol), tBuOLi (40.0 mg, 0.5 mmol), diaryl iodide trifluoromethanesulfonate (0.325 mmol , 1.3 equiv) and CH3CN (2.0 mL) were added to o-cresol (0.25 mmol) and P(NMe2)3 (8.16 mg, 0.05 mmol) in a reaction tube. The reaction mixture was stirred at 130 °C for 12 h under nitrogen protection. After completion of the reaction, it was cooled to room temperature and ethyl acetate (10.0 mL) and aqueous 2N hydrochloric acid (5.0 mL) were added to the mixture and stirred vigorously for 30 min. Subsequently, the aqueous phase was extracted three times with ethyl acetate, and the organic phases were combined and washed with saturated NaHCO3 solution. The organic phase was dried with anhydrous MgSO4, filtered and passed through a diatomaceous earth pad and finally concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by fast chromatography using hexane/ethyl acetate (30:1) as eluent.
