Synthesis
Cyanuric acid (5 g, 38.5 mmol) was dissolved in a slight excess of cooled 3 M NaOH aqueous solution at room temperature and the solution was transferred to a beaker. A solution of Br2 (3 mL, 58.4 mmol) dissolved in CCl4 (6 mL) was slowly added dropwise to the reaction mixture while stirring vigorously at 0°C. An orange colored precipitate was produced immediately during the reaction. The resulting solid product was isolated by filtration, washed several times with cold distilled water and subsequently dried in a vacuum drying oven for 18 hours. Ultimately, an orange crystalline solid 1,3,5-tribromo-1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-trione was obtained in quantitative yield.
