Description
Strontium tetraborate, SrB4O7, (SBO) has been investigated
as a potential nonlinear optical material with
excellent mechanical and optical properties such as
a high power second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient,
high optical damage threshold, high hardness,
etc. Additionally, the SBO crystals possess high UV
transmittance at wavelengths down to about 130 nm.
SrB4O7 congruently melts at 994 °C.
Uses
Strontium tetraborate
is transparent across the far UV to far infra-red spectrum.
Thus, it has great potential for use as lens components
in optical devices such as those used for the fabrication
of very large scale integrated circuits by a lithographic
technique. A number of phosphors based upon the matrix,
SrB4O7, have been investigated. Strontium tetraborate
when activated by Eu2+, is used as a phosphor in
“black-light” lamps for tanning salons.
