Odor
Sweet-oily, citrusy and refreshing, green odor of moderate tenacity. Undiluted not very pleasant, rather oily-fatty, but at concentrations near 1%, or in proper composition, the odor appears more citrusy, sweeter, fresher.
Chemical Properties
Colorless liquid. Almost insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.
Uses
Hexadienylidene acetone is mainly used in the citrusy type, but also in the so-called "aldehydic" base, which is normally a composition of alifatic aldehydes, delicately green notes, fruity notes, and a rich, but delicate floral note, often Muguet. This type base has been used conventionally in modifications of very many successful luxury perfumes, including several great names.
Preparation
Hexadienylidene acetone is produced by condensation of Sorbic aldehyde and Acetone (Claisen condensation).
