It is prepared by reducing o-nitrobenzylamine with iron powder in an acidic medium.
[Stability]:
It is stable at room temperature and pressure and soluble in water. It can be distilled through steam distillation, during which it decomposes and releases ammonia. Its derivatives include: (1) benzoate, a lamellar crystal with a melting point of 167℃; (2) N-α-acetylated compound C6H6N(CH₂NHCOCH₃), a needle-like crystal (recrystallized from hot water), with a melting point of 113℃; N-α-dimethylated compound C6H6N[CH₂N(CH₃)₂], with a melting point of 36~37℃ and a boiling point of 107℃ (1.866kPa); (3) monopicrate, yellow-orange, with a melting point of 143~144℃; (4) dipicrate, yellow crystal, with a melting point of 135℃. O-aminop-cresol is a grayish-white crystal with a melting point of 135℃. It is easily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and chloroform, slightly soluble in water and benzene, and easily soluble in hot water. It is prone to oxidize and discolor in the presence of air. It is produced by nitration and reduction of p-cresol and serves as a dye intermediate, primarily used in the production of fluorescent whitening agent DT.
