Preparation by reaction of benzonitrile with phlo roglucinol monomethyl ether in the presence of zinc chloride and hydrochloric acid in ethyl ether, followed by hydrolysis of the ketimine hydro chloride so formed with boiling water for 15 min (good yield) (Hoesch reaction).
