Nickel oxalate can be used to prepare metallic nickel powder and can also be used as a catalyst, etc.
Nickel oxalate is thermally decomposed in air to produce nickel monoxide; it is thermally decomposed in argon to produce nickel metal powder; nickel oxalate dihydrate is decomposed at 175~275°C to obtain anhydrous material.
By reacting the ammonia complex of nickel chloride with oxalic acid, at low pH, excess oxalic acid releases the ammonia from the nickel-ammonia complex, forming a nickel oxalate precipitate.
